Rescue and Release
8/9/14
As of yesterday August 8th, our little female is living life as she should, free. When the volunteers at the Raptor Center went in to clean her enclosure, she decided enough is enough, it's time to fly and she bolted. She is once again a free birdie. 6/25/14 Todays update is another one of good news. Our little female baby kestrel has now been moved to a bigger enclosure so she can have the room to practice flying and strengthen her muscles. What great news for this little creature, I hate to think what may have happened if we weren't there when she was pushed off. I am glad to see her progressing. They also said that they will keep our number and give us a call when she is released, lets keep our fingers crossed... 6/22/14 Update on our baby kestrel. I called the Raptor Center to see how she was doing. They said she was doing great, eating on her own, and now has another baby kestrel (male) as a roommate. She will remain in the small cages until she shows signs of wanting to fly, then they will place her in the bigger cages so she can strengthen her wings and learn to fly. All is good. I will keep you posted. 6/20/14 While bird watching at the Pueblo Reservoir, a female baby kestrel was pushed from the nest. As she glided to the floor, other birds in the area (fly catchers and starlings) decided that she was a threat and started diving at her. She panicked and was hopping around. Good thing we were there. We ran in and picked her up. We tried to keep her calm and we took her to the Raptor Center.. |

Sad news for my update today. When calling to check on how the hawk was doing, they notified us that he passed overnight. They say it was due to starvation and that he was just too far along. Even though our efforts did not accomplish anything, I still would do it again.

Here is an update on Zane (the rescued Ferruginous Hawk)
When I called today, around 3:30 pm, I was told that he is still with us, but in critical condition. During his vet visit they found no trauma to his body. Labs will be taken on Thursday, and
results will be in on around Monday. He is being treated for lead poisoning as a precaution since hunting season is here. For now he is a bit more lively and we will continue to pray for our new feathered friend.

We were in Penrose Colorado when we ran into this Ferruginous Hawk about to be eaten by a few eagles. He was surrounded by 2 juveniles Bald Eagles and 1 sub adult, and 1 Golden Eagle that was hovering over his shoulder. But we saved him and rushed him to the Pueblo Raptor center. We are crossing our fingers for a full recovery and will be checking in on him daily.
